Short Course Overview

Classes in this program aim to teach students essential principles and techniques in drawing and painting. The focus is to provide students with the basic skills that form the foundations of art making. These art classes also give students the opportunity to assess their personal interests and preferences for further artistic studies.

Drawing for Beginners

Drawing classes in this 8-week program broadly examine the principles of still life, life drawing and portraiture. Students will explore a variety of methods, techniques, and media such as: pencils, charcoal, dry pastels, collage, pen and wash. This class will also aim to develop students' understanding of, and skills in, drawing from observation.

Introduction to Painting

This painting course begins with instruction in basic colour theory, the principles of colour mixing, and the preparation of a surface on which artwork will be created. Students will be introduced to and will work with a range of media from acrylic paints to oils, inks and watercolour. Students will explore various techniques and work with a range of painting tools such as: soft and coarse brushes, palette knives, sponges and rollers.

This painting class aims to give students a broad introduction to the painting process, enabling students to make an easy transition into ongoing painting classes, or to facilitate their own personal pursuits.
