Drawing Classes Overview

Drawing is key and fundamental to all art making. The practice of drawing allows us to develop visual communication skills; it enables the development of ideas and of problem solving skills through and within art making. By exploring various ways of seeing, composing and mark making, the practice of drawing also provides the basis for ongoing art studies.

Drawing classes at the school will assist participants of all level of skills and experience, to develop observational and interpretive methods in drawing. Students will explore skills in close observation and will learn ways to compose images informed by essential principles of art.

Drawing classes will also aim to develop student’s skills in the use of different media and techniques, and to develop their capacity to understand and control the chosen medium. Media used will include: pencil; charcoal and compressed charcoal; soft and hard dry pastel; oil pastel; pen and wash; ink; collage; and mixed media.

General Drawing – Beginners

This drawing course consists of a combination of figure and still life classes. The course aims to assist participants, at beginners level, to develop observational and interpretive methods in drawing.

Students will explore various processes of seeing. This class will also aim to develop students skills in the use of different media and techniques, and to develop their capacity to understand and control the chosen medium.

Students will also have the opportunity to progress to the Drawing Intensive class as their skills increase.

Life Drawing

This life drawing class is designed for beginners to advanced students of drawing. In this class students will explore and develop an understanding of the frame and form of the figure, which will include examination of the skeletal and muscular structure of the body.

Students will learn about proportion and the structure of the human form. In this life drawing class students will also be taught about the figure in space and in motion.

Drawing Studio

This drawing class is designed for students with a solid understanding of rudimentary drawing skills. (These skills are taught in General Drawing- Beginners classes and the Drawing for Beginners short course.) In this drawing class, students will develop more advanced skills in observational drawing and will also be taught advanced colour theory using  a variety of media. Although the bulk of teaching will be focused on drawing, students will also be introduced to new media and taught to use and apply these materials.

The objective of this course is to give students the opportunity to enhance and refine their art making skills in a challenging program. This course is also suitable for teachers who are seeking to augment and develop their current skills.

Please note that materials are not provided. A list of recommended materials will be sent to students on enrolment. A1 cartridge paper, and basic drawing materials can be purchased from the studio.
