Overview

These courses provide the opportunity for young people (13-18yrs) to develop strong foundational drawing and painting skills. The school is committed to providing young students with a learning environment that allows them to explore and develop their personal goals and interests in art making.

A further and practical objective of this course is to assist students in acquiring the technical competencies often required in various art related fields such as: fine art, graphic design, animation, illustration and fashion design.

Drawing & Painting Studio

The drawing classes within this course for young people focus on teaching the principles of still life, figure drawing and portraiture. Students will explore a variety of methods, techniques, and media such as: pencils, charcoal, dry pastels, collage, pen and wash. This class will also aim to develop students' understanding of, and skills in, drawing from observation.

The painting classes within this course will include instruction in basic colour theory, the principles of colour mixing, and the preparation of a surface on which artwork will be created. Students will be introduced to and will work with a range of media from acrylic paints to oils, inks and watercolour.

Drawing for Animation

This drawing course is designed for students who are interested in developing skills required to create animation concepts. The skills taught in this course include: figure drawing; character design; staging and background design; visual narrative and storyboarding.

Students will also learn to draw the human figure (from life and photo reference) both as static form and in motion. Students will be taught traditional methods of animation which will include techniques such as flip book work, and ink and paint drawn cels. Although digital work will not be directly taught in this class, the course aims to provide students with the foundational skills required for working with digital animation.

Unit 1: Character Design - In this first unit students will learn the key elements of character design. Students will begin by learning to draw the human skull; this will be followed by them learning about, and to draw, facial muscles and plane changes of the head. During the course of this unit, students will create a character; they will learn to draw facial expressions; and will create a small 3D sculpture for their character.
